Osseointegrated Dental Implants

The Bionic Human

Abstract

Edentulism, the condition where some or all teeth are missing, is treated by the use of dental prostheses. Conventional prostheses are satisfactory for most patients. Unacceptable results are usually the result of unfavorable anatomy. Anatomic improvements are possible through procedures such as the vestibular extension or vestibuloplasty that create a broader area for denture coverage (1). The recognition that this approach provides only moderate improvement in stability while having less positive effects on retention and support of dental prostheses has led to the development of more definitive methods.
