Abstract

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) represent two of the most significant manifestations of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Only myocardial infarction and stroke are more prevalent in terms of life-threatening cardiovascular disease (Stein PD, Matta F, Clin Chest Med. 31:611–628, 2010). While diagnosis can be challenging due to the wide spectrum of presentation, it is essential to maintain vigilance for these conditions in order to reduce potentially life-threatening and long-term complications. Evaluating the patient’s history, signs and symptoms, risk factors, the use of validated clinical prediction rules, and appropriate diagnostic studies are essential for prompt detection. Once diagnosed, multiple effective treatment options, including well-tolerated oral anticoagulants, are available for short- and long-term therapy.
