Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 418))

Abstract

Streptococcus zooepidemicus (Lancefield Gr. C) is an important opportunist pathogen of the respiratory tract of equids infected with influenza virus or stressed by high ambient temperature or transportation. All horses carry a variety of antigenic types of S. zooepidemicus in their tonsils1. The protective M-like protein (SzP) is the typing antigen and variants are easily recognized by immunoblot phenotype and by their N terminal and central hypervariable amino acid sequences4. The objective of this study was to determine whether lower respiratory tract infections in individual horses are caused by a mixture of antigenic types.
