The Socio-emotional Development of Maltreated Children

An Empirical and Theoretical Analysis

  • Chapter

Abstract

The thought of a maltreated child conjurs up images of bruises, fractures, malnutrition, and the like. But it is the emotional damage, not the physical damage, that, despite the difficulty in operationalizing the concept and despite the legal and political controversy surrounding the concept, may have the most frequent, long-term deleterious effect on the development of maltreated children (Juvenile Justice Standards Project, 1977). It is curious, then, that among the many issues concerning the phenomenon of child maltreatment, the issue of the impact of maltreatment on a child’s socio-emotional development took so long to interest researchers.
