Abstract

Paracoccidioidomycosis previously known as South American blastomycosis or Lutz, Splendore, and Almeida disease, is a subacute to chronic granulomatous fungal infection caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, a thermally dimorphic fungus. Originally described in 1908 by Lutz [1], paracoccidioidomycosis is the most prevalent systemic endemic mycosis in many countries in Latin America. It is believed that the disease is acquired by respiratory route [2, 3]. The primary pulmonary infection in most of the cases is inapparent or olygosymptomatic, but later it can disseminate, involving many organs, especially mucous and cutaneous tissue, lymph nodes, adrenals, and the central nervous system [4, 5].
