The Application of Molecular Biology to the Development of Novel Vaccines

  • Chapter
Immunobiology of Proteins and Peptides V

Abstract

Before the dawn of molecular biology and recombinant DNA technology, vaccines were essentially natural products. Such vaccines comprise live attenuated disease agents, killed organisms, or biochemically isolated subcomponents or subfractions of the disease causing agent. The fact that these classical vaccines are natural products ensured that, if sufficient care were taken (during attenuation, inactivation, or subunit isolation), the important protective epitopes represented on the disease agent could be preserved on the vaccine candidate in proper immunogenic form.
