Spectral-Pitch Pattern

A Concept Representing the Tonal Features of Sounds

  • Chapter

Abstract

Recently the significance of tonal information for the sensation of timbre and pitch has been well recognized and emphasized. Accordingly a psychoacoustic concept was developed which enabled a quantitative description of that tonal information. This is the Spectral Pitch Pattern. Complex tones, as for example musical tones and voiced speech, possess not only fundamental pitch but, as is well known, also components such as harmonics, which can be ‘heard out’ as individual pure tones with corresponding pitches. This fact was extensively investigated and evaluated by Helmholtz (1863). The Spectral Pitch Pattern depicts these pitches and their relative salience.
