Abstract

Culture and immunohistological results from the thymus of human myasthenia gravis (MG) patients suggest that the small ‘clumps’ of cells in conventional suspensions (CONV) prepared by mechanical disruption may be very rich in germinal centres (GO. If these ‘clumps’ are rescued and dispersed with the protease dispase (referred to as D/C suspensions), they spontaneously synthesise about 4 times more autoantibody to the acetylcholine receptor (AChR) than CONV cultures. This was also sometimes the case with total IgG. It was therefore proposed that the D/C technique may be a convenient method for the isolation and enrichment of GC cells.
