Abstract
Several studies with rodent embryos have provided evidence that premorula stages were able to produce their own estrogens (see Dickmann et al., 1976). These estrogens seem to be necessary for the transformation of the compacted morula into the cavitated blastocyst stage (Sengupta et al., 1977, 1982, 1983; Paria et al., 1984). In contrast, the role of sex steroids in the development of zona pellucida intact embryos from farm animals is not well defined. In the pig, it was suggested that estrogens are involved in the migration and spacing of porcine embryos on day 7 (Pope et al., 1982). On days 11 to 12 of pregnancy, estrogens are considered to be the embryonic signal for the maternal recognition of pregnancy (Perry et al., 1973; Heap et al., 1979).
