Abstract
Viral hepatitis is one of the diseases earliest recognized by man to be infectious. Hippocrates described infectious icterus more than 2000 years ago, and epidemic jaundice has been widely recognized since the Middle Ages. Hepatitis has occurred frequently in military and civilian populations during wars, and it sometimes approached the importance of plague and cholera as a cause of pandemics in Europe in past centuries. Apart from recognition of their contagious nature, little was known about the infectious agents until well into the present century.
