Abstract

The evolutionary problem presented by insect pheromone systems is one that is common to sexual signaling systems in general: How is extensive divergence among species, even closely related species, reconciled with apparent conservatism within species? This pattern is a necessary feature of a signal system that is effective in prezygotic isolation in a speciose lineage. Many possible mechanisms have been suggested to explain its evolution (see Butlin and Ritchie 1994, for example) but most center on the special nature of signal evolution.
