Summary
The principles underlying functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) are described, with examples of the various approaches that are employed. These include the use of exogenous (invasive) contrast agents such as gadolinium-DTPA and noninvasive endogenous contrast methods (BOLD magnetic resonance imaging, BOLD magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and arterial spin labeling). The advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed, and technical aspects of the implementation are reviewed. Illustrations of the applications of BOLD magnetic resonance imaging being performed in the authors’ MR Unit include investigations of motor tasks, language dominance, verbal working memory, covert verbal fluency, and hallucinations.
