Epstein-Barr Virus and the Lacrimal Gland Pathology of Sjögren’s Syndrome

  • Chapter
Lacrimal Gland, Tear Film, and Dry Eye Syndromes

Abstract

Sjogren’s Syndrome (SS) is an immunologic disease occurring predominantly in women that is associated with severe dry eyes and disabling ocular irritation. SS has been reported to be the most common immunologic disease next to rheumatoid arthritis, and has an estimated prevalence of 1.2 million patients in the United States (based on a reported prevalence of 0.4% in Sweden1).
