Antibiotic Resistance: The Pandemic

  • Chapter
Tropical Diseases

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 531))

Abstract

Bacteria have become resistant to many antibiotics over the last twenty years. Practitioners, who were highly optimistic in the 1950s and 1960s in treating infections empirically with available antibiotics, are now discovering that empiric treatment in hospitals is only effective when broad-spectrum antibiotics are used that cover many bacteria. This is because of the unforeseen rise in resistance to antibiotics. Tailored antimicrobial treatment is only possible after the results of cultures and susceptible testing are obtained from a diagnostic laboratory (McGowan Jr. and Metchock, 1995).
