Abstract
Necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) is a rare disease primarily affecting middle- and older-aged individuals. No predisposing risk factor is identified in a high percentage of patients. Mortality rates have not improved significantly over the past century. Amputation rates are high and multiple debridements are the rule. Wide surgical debridement is the only effective therapy for NSTI and that time is of the utmost essence. Mortality remains between 10 and 30 % and long-term disability is common.
