Abstract

Until the second half of the third decade of the twentieth century, questions concerning the controlling mechanisms in the development of the testes and in the maintenance of their function were frequently asked, but poorly understood. Numerous clinical and pathological observations led to a vague idea that these mechanisms may be located within the structure of the brain.
