Abstract
In 1973 the Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus L.) was included in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) as a species which could become threatened with extinction unless trade was regulated to avoid exploitation. Since 1975 concern for the macaque in its natural habitat has been expressed by a number of scientists (especially Taub, 1975, 1977 and Deag, 1977) and some measures for its protection have been proposed. However, what has emerged from the papers compiled in this book is that the problem at present is not only the protection of the species in its habitat but also the proper use of captive monkeys and especially surplus stock from successful breeding populations.
