Nutritional Modulation of Oxygen Radical Pathology

Part of the book series: Advances in Nutritional Research ((ANUR,volume 8))

Abstract

In the past decade the pathogenicity of oxygen radicals has emerged as a major focus of research in fundamental biology. This emergence is reflected in the appearance of numerous books and conference proceedings on the subject, of which only five are cited here (Simic et al., 1988; Chow, 1988; Halliwell, 1988a; Quintanilha, 1988a; Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985), as well as several new periodicals devoted to the publication of ongoing research. The field has been remarkable for the rapidity with which basic research findings have been incorporated into clinical medicine. New perceptions of the role of oxygen radicals in physiological processes have led to novel strategies for the prevention or treatment of a range of pathologies, including inflammmation, immunosuppression, cataracts, radiation injury, hyperoxia, cirrhosis and cancer. The prominent involvement of nutrients in the metabolism of oxygen radicals has raised the possibility that these conditions may be subject to nutritional modulation.
