Abstract
Pinus brutia Ten. and , Cupressus sempervirens L. are important forest tree species in Turkey for various economic and ecological reasons. P. brutia occupies 3.1 million ha. of forest land, which constitutes 36% of the forest areas in the country1. It grows from sea level up to 1500 meters on the Taurus Mountains2,3. This species is one of the most important forest trees in the region, providing both timber resources and amenity in Turkey; and it is preferable for afforestation of dry and degraded areas in the Mediterranean region and elsewhere, due to its wide tolerance range and drought resistance4,5. C. sempervirens L. also grows in several countries with Mediterranean climate6,7. It makes largest natural stands in Koprulu Kanyon National Park in Antalya, Turkey; making occasional mixed stands with P. brutia.
