Abstract
Our research group is considered with the definition, implementation and application of novel concepts for database management systems. Here we present the joined experiences of introducing active capabilities on top of a relational database system and its application in the context of cancer clustering. Active databases provide rules in order to enhance conventional databases by mechanisms for detecting events and triggering the corresponding actions. Events are raised due to state changes in the database, by a clock or by external components. Actions manipulate the database, trigger external tools, signal to the user etc. Clustering cancer cases in time and space is the basis for empirical studies on their determinants. We present our approach for detecting clusters in tumour registries. The latter provide information about national or areawide cancer cases. In the system presented here hypotheses on cancer clusters are generated as soon as significant events have encountered.
