Abstract

This paper defines “behavior extraction” as the act of analyzing natural language sources on digital devices, such as specifications and patents, in order to find the behaviors that these documents describe and represent those behaviors in a formal manner. These formal representations may then be used for simulation or to aid in the automatic or manual creation of models for these devices. The system described here uses conceptual graphs for these formal representations, in the semantic analysis of natural language documents, and for its word-knowledge database. This paper explores the viability of such a conceptual-graph-based system for extracting behaviors from a set of patents. The semantic analyzer is found to be a viable system for behavior extraction, now requiring the extension of its dictionary and grammar rules to make it useful in creating models.
