Abstract

In the Western political tradition, the history of citizenship has been intimately bound up with the nation state as the site of civil and political power. This concept of citizenship emphasises that when a person becomes a member of a state, either by birth or naturalisation, a set of legal rights and obligations comes into play; this relationship is the defining core of citizenship.
