Abstract

The accuracy of a position determined using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology depends in the first place on the evaluation of so‐called station‐ and distancedependent errors. For precise determination of small crustal movements, additional error sources must be taken into account. In this paper, the advantages of an analytical surface deformation theory for describing movements of the earth's crust are briefly presented, and the results of deformation analysis based on the annual velocities derived from the GPS data acquired in the region of the Adriatic Sea are discussed.
