Abstract
Science can provide the basis for political action. However, as Shiva and Bandyopadhyay (1986) argue, scientific evidence can only generate the social authority for political action on complex environmental problems when there is consensus within a society about the nature of the problem. Scientific information is not automatically translated into political decisions, but goes through a complex process in which stakeholders and decisionmakers interpret the information and negotiate with each other.
