Conclusions
To conclude we have presented a fully quantum scattering technique which yields the S matrix of inhomogeneous multi-wall nanotubes. We have shown that the inter-tube interaction drastically modifies transport, not only by opening pseudo-gaps close to the Fermi energy, but also by redistributing the amplitude of the transverse component of the wave-function across the multi-wall structure. These effects, when combined together, form a convincing explanation of puzzling experiments in which non-integer values of conductance have been found in multi-wall nanotubes13. To arrive at this quantitative description of the experiments, we have explored several possibilities regarding on the nature of the nanotube/metal interfaces. Only those calculations in which the outermost tube is in direct contact with the gold electrode showed good agreement with the experiments.
