Abstract
It is found that the mud distributions in the Huanghai Sea and East China Sea are extremely identical with the upwelling's in terms of locality and extent. The process of the mud formation is examined. It is concluded that vertical circulation i.e. upwelling plays a determinant role in the process and furthermore, it is inferred that wherever upwelling occurs on continental shelf, mud should be formed and, conversely, wherever downwelling takes place, mud should not exist, for which coarse sediment should substitute.
