Summary
-
1.
The cyanelles ofGloeochaete wittrockiana are located in vesicles of the host cell. They possess a delicate cell-wall. The chromatoplasm of the cyanelle contains 7–10 concentrically arranged single thylakoids, interthylakoidal phycobilisomes and plastoglobuli. The centroplasm which is rich in ribosomes contains polyphosphate granules and a large cylindrical to polyhedral body bound by an osmiophilic lamella which is not a unit membrane.
-
2.
Loss of some cyanelles during celll division of the host and digestion of single cyanelles is documented.
-
3.
Gloeochaete wittrockiana, so far thought of as a member of the orderTetrasporales (Chlorophyceae) mainly due to the possession of pseudoflagella, produces dorsiventrally shaped naked zoospores with two flagella arising from an apical groove and provided with fine flagellar hairs. Beneath the plasmalemma of vegetative cells and zoospores lies a single layer of flattened vesicles and under these lie microtubules.
-
4.
The pseudocilia (2 per cell) of vegetative cells lack the central pair of microtubules in contrast to the flagella of zoospores. There is a proximal to distal progressive decrease in the number of microtubules of the free part of the pseudocilium as inTetrasporales.
-
5.
The transition region of flagella and pseudocilia which are homologous structures, lack the stellate configuration typical for flagella of chlorophycean algae.
-
6.
Gloeochaete has four cruciately arranged flagellar roots per cell which are up to 58 microtubules broad and in part multilayered. They resemble the “multilayered structure” found in spermatozoids ofChara, archegoniates and in zoospores of a few green algae.
-
7.
During mitosis inGloeochaete the nuclear membrane is broken down, the spindle fibers converge in two poles devoid of centrioles or centriole-like structures, thus differing from mitosis inTetraspora.
-
8.
Cell division inGloeochaete is accomplished by furrowing. The furrow contains a circumferentially oriented band of microtubules. No phycoplast as inTetraspora is formed.
-
9.
The genusGloeochaete therefore has to be removed from theTetrasporales and also from theChlorophyta. Its final taxonomic position is still uncertain.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
