Hermaphroditism in Insects. Studies on Icerya purchasi

  • Chapter
Intersexuality in the Animal Kingdom

Abstract

Hermaphroditism occurs in many different zoological groups. Insects, however, which represent by far the largest subphylum in the animal kingdom, are almost exclusively gonochoristic. Accidental cases of hermaphroditism have been reported for Culex (Sicart and Larrouy, 1962) and Polyergus rufescens (Beck, 1958). These studies, however, are merely morphological and it is probable that we are dealing here with examples of gynandromorphism rather than hermaphroditism. Reports on three other genera — Termitoxenia, Perla, and Ieevya — seem to be more interesting although many questions remain as yet unanswered.
