Cell Wall Formation in Diatoms: Morphogenesis and Biochemistry

  • Chapter

Abstract

Diatoms are important for a variety of reasons. They are ecologically significant as the foundation of the marine food chain; they account for as much as 25% of the world’s primary net production and are often the most ecologically noteworthy species in lakes and oceans; and owing to their role in forming mud banks and bottoms, they are chiefly responsible for the geochemical cycle of silicon. Industrially, the finely powdered diatomaceous earth composed of siliceous diatom “shells” (dia- tomite) is of considerable importance as an absorbent, insulator, filtering agent, clarifier, and filler.
