By displacing calcium, Cd accumulates in bones and softens them (Wang and Bhattacharyya, 1993). Moreover, both Cd and Pb have long been classified as endocrine disruptors (Colborn et al., 1993), while Zn, though regarded as an essential micro nutrient (Lichtfouse et al., 2009), can, at toxic levels, lead to a shortage of other nutrients (e.g., Cu and Fe), leading to anæmia, neutropænia and poor immune function (Fosmire, 1990).

2015, Research in Veterinary ScienceCitation Excerpt :In humans, the interaction between Ca and Cd is well understood in the context of itai-itai disease in Japanese women, a disease associated with the development of bone deformities, oesteomalacia and an increase propensity to osteoporosis (Friberg et al., 1974). Work in mice suggests that the bone deformities result from Cd deposition in bone tissue, leading to interference with calcification, decalcification and bone remodelling (Wang and Bhattacharyya, 1993). Furthermore, Cd has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on vitamin D-stimulated calcium transport in rats (Ando et al., 1981).

In animals exposed to cadmium, bone demineralization begins early after the start of cadmium exposure and well before the onset of kidney damage (Wang and Bhattacharyya, 1993; Wilson and Bhattacharyya, 1997). In function of additional adjustment for correlated exposures we found differences in the association of marker PCBs, p,p′-DDE, HCB and PCB118 with self-reported health status.
