The human CPE gene is located on chromosome 4q32.3, and is highly conserved among species [3,15]. It contains nine exons and shares high homology with other members of the metallocarboxypeptidase gene family [16].

Monogenic forms of obesity caused by polymorphism(s)/mutation(s) in genes such as carboxypeptidase E, leptin, leptin receptor, tubby, melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) and proopiomelanocortin (POMC) leads to impaired energy homeostasis, which dramatically impair body weight regulation (Geffroy et al., 1995; Hall et al., 1993; Huszar et al., 1997; Kleyn et al., 1996; Mountjoy and Wong, 1997; Prochazka and Leiter, 1991; Tartaglia et al., 1995). Considering the importance of genes in transmitting traits to the next generation, detailed studies of the biological consequences of genetic polymorphisms are necessary to better understand the molecular physiology of obesity.
