2017, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta - General SubjectsCitation Excerpt :The first protease inhibitor found in snake venom was reported in 1972 when Takahashi and colleagues [197] isolated a potent kunitz-type protease inhibitor from the venom of D. russelli. The occurrence of this family of protease inhibitors is reported in Elapidae and Viperidae snake venoms [79,198–200]. This class of protease inhibitors presents a conserved motif found in kunitz bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor, which is the active domain responsible for the inhibition of proteases such as trypsin, chymotrypsin, elastase, thrombin, and activated factor X [201,202].
